A Master Gardener is a family member, friend, or neighbor who loves gardening and has found a way to share that love while providing a service to the community.
Albuquerque Area Extension Master Gardeners (AAEMG) is an all volunteer organization, dedicated to providing gardening advice and information to Albuquerque area residents and homeowners. Its members are trained in basic horticulture by the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Cooperative Extension Service.
The volunteer projects in which AAEMG members participate are many and varied. Perhaps the best known is the Master Gardener Hotline which area homeowners may call for information and assistance with plant and landscape problems.
Each year, approximately 25 different volunteer projects are certified for AAEMG volunteer participation. They embrace everything from educating children about gardening to distributing surplus produce (grown by master gardeners) to local food banks. AAEMG members donate in excess of 9000 hours of volunteer service each year.
AAEMG is a member of the Council of Albuquerque Garden Clubs Inc, which owns and maintains the Albuquerque Garden Center, located at 10200 Lomas Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112. AAEMG members maintain the Bonnie Lowenstein Perennial Garden on the Center’s grounds. The demonstration gardens at the Center are open to the public 9:30 to 2:30, Monday through Friday.
